                                                Proverbs 3:5,6

 Trust in the LORD with all your heart  and lean not on your own understanding;

6   in all your ways acknowledge him,  and he will make your paths straight.

He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But he who walks wisely will be delivered.

Proverbs 28:26

Do you know how to live?

I do not know how to live.

I do not know the way to life.

The Bible shows the dangerous things to avoid.

The Bible shows us the good things to seek.

                                    Biblical view of life

Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.“  14 Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.  15 Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.“

   Life is uncertain.

Life is very short compared to eternity.

                                    Biblical view of God

The LORD is compassionate and gracious, Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.

Psalm 103:8

If God doesn’t grant you what you ask, it is because He loves you.

Trusting in God = Trusting in the Word

Trusting in the Word = Living by the Word

We can’t live according to the Bible unless we know it very well.

Most Americans own a Bible but most cannot tell you what the 4 gospel books are.

We can’t live by the Word unless we have large portion of it memorized.

                                    Radical life change

Summer of 1990

Radically changed by reading the Word

1993-1996  in seminary

Radically changed by memorizing the Word

Henry Martyn

was one of the first missionaries to India. He had an extremely difficult life.   He said that it was the Bible alone that gave him the strength to keep going.

William Wilberforce

Used by God to abolish slavery in England in 1812.     “Walked today from Hyde Park Corner repeating the 119th Psalm in great comfort.”

John Ruskin

not a pastor or a missionary.

He was a Christian. He was raised by a mother who had him memorize Psalm 1, 9, 23, 32, 39, 90, and Psalm 119.

“of all the pieces of the Bible which my mother taught me, that which cost me the most to learn and which was to my childish mind, the most repulsive, which has now become of all the most precious to me in its overflowing and glorious passion of love for the law of God.

Why You Are the Way You Are

You are the way you are because of your thoughts.

The way you will be in the future will be greatly influenced by your thoughts.

For as he thinks within himself, so he is.

    Proverbs 23:7a

Change your thinking and you will change your life.

Changing your thinking will change your feelings.

Changing your feeling will change your actions.

Changing your actions will change your life.

I am your constant companion. I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden. I will push you onward or drag you down to failure. I am completely at your command. Show me exactly how you want something done and after a few lessons I will do it automatically. I am the servant of all great men; and alas, of all failures as well. Those who are great, I have made great. Those who are failures, I have made failures. I am not a machine, though I work with all the precision of a machine plus the intelligence of a man. You may run me for profit or run me for ruin it makes no difference to me. Take me, train me, be firm with me, and I will place the world at your feet. Be easy with me and I will destroy you. Who am I?

                                                Who am I?

I am:
a worshiper, either of God or myself or someone else or an idol

Why am I here on earth?

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
