                                                Luke 18:35-43

35As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by."  38He called out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"   39Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"   40Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41"What do you want me to do for you?"        "Lord, I want to see," he replied.

42Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has healed you." 43Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.

George Barna compared the attitudes of born-again Christians and nonChristians. He found they are equally satisfied with their lives.

The majority of born-again Christians in the USA are living for health, a successful career, a comfortable lifestyle, and a functional family.

Background

Jesus was accompanied by a massive crowd, a great multitude. Why? They were all headed for Jerusalem for the Passover

Blindness was very common back then

The blind were inevitably reduced to begging because the idea was if you're blind, you're blind because you're sinful,

-blind man - helpless

-begging – he had nobody to help him

the only people who were below the blind were tax collectors

Jesus, Son of David,"

That's His title as the one who has the right to fulfill the Davidic Covenant in 2 Samuel 7:10-13

And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning 11 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders [a] over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies.
" 'The LORD declares to you that the LORD himself will establish a house for you: 12 When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

                                                Matthew 21:9

The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,    "Hosanna[b] to the Son of David!"
"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"[c]    "Hosanna[d] in the highest!"

                                    "Have mercy on me,"

which means he confesses his helpless condition

He is admitting he doesn’t deserve help.

-             He is admitting he cannot change himself.

-             Not only did he receive his sight, he was saved (sozo).

-             when He gets to Jerusalem, nobody's saved until the thief on the cross is saved.

One of the primary themes of the Bible: repentance

Mark 1:14-15 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,  and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

Mark 6:12 So they went out and preached that people should repent

Acts 17:30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent

                                    How to repent

Tell God EXACTLY how you want to change.

“I want to see.”

“I want to stop gossiping.”

“I want to stop being jealous of others.”

“I want to stop turning to the world when sad.”

God does not force people to repent.

"I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee." - Jeremiah 31:3

sink not below the level of a brute, for even a brute will render good for good. It is the devil who renders evil for good; yet you are sinking to his level if you continue in sin, and turn not unto God, who has  dealt so kindly and so graciously with you.

as I learn more of his goodness, it will always continue to lead me to repentance

Luke 15.

The lost sheep,

the lost coin,

lost son are all found.

In each case, a party follows.

God is delighted when we repent. Our repenting is the occasion for great joy in heaven (and great rage from Satan). Those who do not understand their own need, like the prodigal son’s elder brother and like many of the Pharisees, will not be able to join in the spirit of the celebration.

Highpoints of the week for me was the result of repentance.

Repentance

      (finished reading a parenting book)

Chose to let go of unforgiveness

chose to keep my commitment  (to vacuum)

                                    Results of repentance

Improved relationships - 1 John 1:7

If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin."

When we repent, there  is joy in heaven.

When we repent, God has joy.

When we repent, we have joy. – Acts 3:19

Acts 3:19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,

God allows us to experience His joy when we repent.

We always gain more than we give up.

When we give up one pattern of associations, the ones that kept us away from God, we gain a new pattern of associations, people who pray for us and seek our best.

The Holy Spirit will not change you without your cooperation.

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.'"     -  Isaiah 1:18

Will you not turn unto him, and live?

                                                Application

1. Believe God can change you.

When the Niagara falls bridge was built in the late 1800’s, they attached a string to a kite and flew it across the falls. To the string they attached a rope, which was used to attach a chain, then a cord, then a cable. They built concrete upon the cables. When you start saying, “I am dead to that sin…”you may be weak, but as you continue to do that, you will get stronger.

2. Surrender

You became a Christian by saying, “I cannot do it by myself.” You grow in Christ in the same exact way.
